Rule change in the World Sportscar Championship in the early 70's meant Porsche's dominance with the 917 was over. Fortunately, they had an instant classic waiting in the wings for the newly created ETCC. The first 911s to get the race prep treatment were based off of the 911 S. As development went along, the displacement went from 2.4, to 2.7 (The classic 911 Carrera RS 2.7), to 2.8. Wider tyres and fender flares, matched with 917 developed brakes gave birth to the RSR 2.8 in 1973. Porsche sold numerous RSR 2.8s to customer teams, and reaped the rewards. Almost unbeatable in the early stages of the ETCC, it also gave good showings at 24 hours of Sebring, and the Targa Florio. In 1974, as development continued, Porsche unveiled the new 3.0 RSR factory cars. Instead of the duck tail, these monsters featured extensive aerodynamic bodywork, wider rear tyres, and a wide Whale tail on top of the engine. Handling is as expected, classic 911. With the engine hanging out over the rear axle, power understeer and snap lift off oversteer are the norm. Carrying the 3.0 Litre flat 6 over the rear tyres, ample power is on tap and acceleration is fantastic. The wide Goodyear slicks provide large amounts of grip, although the limit is fairly abrupt, so don't abuse the rear tyres too much while sliding through corners, or you'll find yourself facing backwards very quickly. The king of the hill in the GTC76 class, this is the car to beat. - Jerry Chen
